paper tiger [22 Apr 2008|07:45am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

something kinda rad and amazing happened to me yesterday:

i auditioned for beck.

i was super nervous. especially from the moment i could hear through the thick door that beck was actually there singing and playing guitar. but, as soon as i met him....he seemed like such a gentle whisp of a man. he's very laid-back, and there's something so fragile about him when you make eye contact with him...the funniest part was the fact that we were practically wearing the same outfit (white dress shirt/black vest).

getting to hang out with beck on a leather 80's sofa was pretty awesome. he mentioned that he used to live in pasadena (where i live), and that he'd auditioned for the high school i went to (LACHSA) and had gotten rejected. he sent in songs that he'd written, an art piece and a 'zine, but to no avail. kinda funny how life works out...

as for the audition itself, i think i played my best. i learned a new pick technique without utilizing an actual pick just for the occasion (i grew out my nails since picks always feel like foreign objects in my hand). i also taught myself to slap/pop this one part of his song (no one ever slaps on bass anymore)....so, i think i really stretched myself to make his very eclectic music work for me. i adapted myself without losing my integrity.

but i don't think i got the gig. i didn't sing much back-up vocals at all. i didn't realize until it was too late (an hour before leaving, while watching live shows on youtube), that most of his bandmates sing along entire verses with him. and i know for a fact that the guy auditioning before me (who plays bass for SIA) was singing those parts.

i've never really had to sing much in the past. & it just might be the very reason i didn't nail this one....

but i gotta say- playing with beck for about 45 minutes felt pretty fucking cool, whether or not i'll ever see him again.

ok....i found it. my dream-bike:

Schwinn "Cream" cruiser

not too fancy. not too girly or gimmicky. just enough retro flair. it's perfect.

a doggy rescue story. [08 Sep 2006|08:41am]
[ mood | determined ]

so, the other day....i pulled out of the driveway on my way to work, when all of a sudden i catch glimpse of this small dog running across the very busy street we live next to. and all i could think was, 'ohmygod! i'm going to watch this thing get killed.' so i watched to see if anyone was chasing it or pulling over for it. nothing. there was no way i could just sit there and watch this happen in slow motion. so, i pulled my car over to the side and got out. sure enough, this happens to be THE CUTEST PUG I HAVE EVER SEEN! it wasn't your typical pug. she was kind of leggy and skinny, and had a petite little head. it looked kinda like this (not actually her):

my worse fear was that she might spook and dart into the street. so i got down on my knees and held out my hand like i had something in it. she came to me immediately. the second she got within petting distance, i snatched her up and put her in my car. she panicked at first, but soon settled onto my lap........and then, my heart just melted!!!! at one point, she put her front paws on my shoulders and was just standing up, facing me- sniffing my face, sizing me up. she was like a little monkey person. i wanted to eat her up!

since she didn't have any tags, i drove her to the pasadena humane society....where i was assured that i could adopt her if her owners didn't come for her.

4 hours later, they turned up.

i was relieved for her. she was obviously somebody's baby. someone's pride and joy. (hopefully they'll get smart and put a collar on her, or micro-chip her)........but on the inside, i was crushed. i secretly wanted her all to myself. she was gentle and perfect.

& THAT'S when i decided: I WANT A PUG! so i've shifted from wanting a brussels griffon to a pug (just like you, nicole!).
i'm keeping my eyes glued to the rescue sites. i'm craving one like some women crave a child.

i am smitten.

an update [27 Jul 2006|07:59am]
[ mood | grateful ]

good things that have happened in the past few months:

  • ronald and i have made our apartment into a darling home.
  • i auditioned for beyonce knowles' band.
  • we've successfully thrown dinner parties at least once every other week (usually 2 or 3 guests at a time, and almost always 3-4 courses.)
  • i joined great northern and have played 4 shows already.
  • i won a bass guitar on ebay (and LOVE IT)!

  • got offered to go on a west coast tour with great northern (santa cruz, san francisco, portland, seattle).
  • i got my first tax return and insurance money from an accident i was in (which completely paid for my bass)!
  • we got A/C installed!
  • i tracked down my earliest childhood friend on myspace!

bad things that have happened in the past few months:

  • i did not get the beyonce gig (although in retrospect- thanks to great northern, this was a blessing in disguise).
  • some of my favoritest people in the world (you know who you are) moved away to portland...and i cried for 2 weeks. :(
  • the GN tour was cancelled. i guess the band we were going to tour with decided to stay in europe longer than they planned. bah!
  • i still have not gotten all my "Thank You" cards out for the wedding. eek!
  • said friend has not yet responded. :(

but the bottom line is- the good things have definitely out-weighed the bad. ronald and i feel pretty darn lucky when we look around at our little humble abode and realize how good things really are for us. i mean, it's no cake-walk. we both hold down 2 jobs (my 2 part-times and his full+part-time), and all that commuting is weighing heavily on us gas-wise (the end for me and the bookstore may be more near than i'd hoped for)....but we do what we can. we live lavishly on a dime budget and try our darndest to include our closest pals in everything we do. and besides, i just want to be a rock-star really.

and i think it's possible that i've got a good ol' fighting chance.
